I’m with Zondra,
Bring the laptop and leave off something else if needed. The rules on laptops have been changing over the years and are getting laxer most of the time. As Zondra said they often don’t count as a carryon bag. I’ll usually check the charger and all the extra wires etc and just bring the laptop to keep the weight down. This last year I bought a backpack laptop case. In the odd times when I can’t have both, a change of clothes goes in with laptop. I’ve only had to do that once on a New Zealand domestic flight.
