Hey guys. This is my first post here––although I’ve been a long time lurker––and I just wanted to preface this by saying this forum has been a great source of helpful info in my magical quest of attaining a job on the ice, as it has for many others, so thanks to all who have posted info and other stuff.

I read from some others that back when Raytheon still held the contract it was sometimes helpful for job-seekers to go and attend the RPSC job fair in Denver, as some felt it gave them a slight upper hand in getting picked. Since Lockheed Martin has taken the reigns, I was curious if the same fair is still happening this year (and if so at what time), or if that has changed also. Are there different job fairs for each respective company now offering jobs on the ice (PAE, GSC, GHG, etc.)? If anyone knows any info about current job fairs, I’d love to hear it.

    Thanks!

I would be interested in this too if anyone has any information?

I’m not sure if they would be having them at this point. PAE posted their jobs almost 2 months ago and Gana posted theirs a few weeks ago.

I haven’t heard of any actual job fairs — with interviews and such — for a few years now.

Olie!, what kind of position were you hoping to get?

Honestly, I’m hoping to get any position I can. I applied to a few jobs a week ago (painter seemed to fit me best), but I know it can take years for individuals who haven’t been on the ice to even be considered for a job, let alone be offered one. Right now I’m just looking for ANY way to stand a better chance or get an upper hand in case I don’t hear back this year, so if you’ve got any advice I would love to hear it.

PAE posted their jobs quite a while ago at this point. I’m not sure if they are actually far along into the hiring process though. All of my apps certainly still show up as just “Received” same for the positions posted on Gana-a-yoo. I’ve also not seen any of the jobs I applied to removed either. So unless any hiring managers for PAE/Gana peruse and post on this forum we won’t know until someone says they’ve gotten an interview/offer 😛

If I’m not mistaken, the last Denver job fair was in 2008 or 2009. I think after that Raytheon Polar Services did some defense contractor job fairs in the west in 2010, but that’s been it. I don’t know if was a budget cut or they just didn’t care when they didn’t make the short-list on the new contract. I would be surprised in Lockheed did a fair just for the USAP. I could possibly see them doing a booth here and there at defense contractor job fairs, but then again they might realize it’s not worth the time and effort, if they already have more people than jobs for the ice. It will be interesting to see how the sequestering will effect the NSF and the Polar Program. It’s never been that high on the totem pole, so I can see them trying to cut costs and reduce the contract staff even more next summer season. I heard that they might be kicking around the idea of no Winfly this year, or a smaller reduced “Springfly” like they did in 2008.

Thanks for clarifying, if that’s the situation it makes sense they would stop having them. Oh well!
