MemberI’m sure this has been covered somewhere already, but please humor me…
I am a 35 year old female who is interested in working down there in some kind of computer job. I get the feeling that most of the people working down there are 20 something males – not that there is anything wrong with that – LOL! Not that I can’t hang with the younger male crowd, but wondering what is the actual make-up of the people working there? How many women work in the IT jobs there? I’m used to being one of the few females in a male-dominated field so I can handle that – but would like to have some girls to hang with too. Can anyone enlighten me?

KeymasterNot to worry Andromeda
There is a pretty rich mix of ages and sexes, especially the IT crowd. They tend to be an older than the 20’s group. You will more than likely find numerous women in the age group you like to hang around with.

MemberNot sure if the Participant Guide (http://www.usap.gov/travelAndDeployment/contentHandler.cfm?id=541) still lists the statistical breakdown or not but it did once upon a time.
A few years back, the average age of a participant in the program was 37. M/F ratio is about 2:1 at Pole, 3:2 at McM, and close to 1:1 at Palmer.

by “close to 1:1”, doc means 8.5:1 – or at least that’s what it is for this winter 😥

MemberI guess you are sad m0loch because your girl is not down there – but I’ll be at Mactown for summer! 😯
andromeda, you will find lots of cool chicks to hang out with – a lot down there in your age group – including me! (but I’m kind of an old fart) 😀

KeymasterI agree with Rox. Age is less important than finding friends that fit your lifestyle. With hundreds around you all the time, that’s not hard to do.
The other interesting thing is that after a few years, old friends that disappeared seem to keep popping back. Marsha, who has always been an interesting person to have around you, has been away for a while. It seems she is returning.
Marsh, Rox, Me, It’s going to be a frabjous season in supply.

maybe my listing of Palmer’s ratio was just wishful thinking for the day I finally get there…

Actually in the Summer Season, Palmer’s ratio could get down to 1:1 depending on how many of the scientists are female. I’ve even heard of one summer at Palmer where the women out numbered the guys 2:1 😀

Memberhey Mike & Roxie, yes I’ll be back in supply (!!!). Was away one season & felt like 5. And ya’ll are right – age doesn’t seem to matter – you bond with people down there you’d never bond with back “home.” It’s just a real interesting community that feels tribal in nature. Can’t wait to see you guys & meet you new folks…

MemberThanks for all of the feedback! I’m glad that age is a non-issue there – that’s really cool! Sounds like such a nice community down there!! 😀

KeymasterIt will be the most interesting group of people you will ever meet in one place.

MemberDitto on all the comments regarding age and people.
Personally, the ice is an addicting place to return to for me because of the community. Tribal is not a bad way to put it. Few other places in the world leave you dealing so closely with each other so quickly and (for the most part) so dependent on each other maintaining his or her own job, sanity, and world.

MemberI can confirm that one summer there were more females than males at Palmer. I was there at the time and we didn’t even notice.
