KeymasterHere here.
Well hey, I can see a way for the historical society to raise funds: sacrifice a few of those bottles for a tasting party. I’d pay to get in, even expecting the whiskey to be bad by now.

Wow, just noticed that byline.
Actually I would be rather surprised if the bottles survived all of these years of changing Ross Island temperatures.
During the 1977 winter I assisted the doctor in disposing of out-of-date medical supplies, which included some fifths of Old Methuselah bourbon…stuff that the Navy had brought in during their era for medicinal purposes. The bottles had been stored behind biomed outside, and of course were frozen solid, which they would have been continuously for several years. None of the bottles were broken (and they really looked funny!)
(why dispose of them? We had plenty of decent whisky on the bar!)
At Cape Royds I suspect that the changing temperatures might have eventually caused the bottles to break. And that might be even more unlikely if the bottles were brought into the warmer temperatures of the main floor of the hut. I’m curious this wasn’t mentioned in the news article.

ParticipantWell,
They flew the whiskey out, pulled a sample with a syringe out through the cork.
You will now be able to get your own bottle of this lost recipe…

KeymasterThe National Geographic Explorer came by the station a few weeks ago, and they had the re-created whiskey at their bar. $20/shot. (Sounds expensive but what the heck.)
I wanted to try it and a few other friends joined me. It’s good, potent stuff. I’ll post pics when I find them…

ParticipantNice!
Only puzzling piece is how do you make 15 year old whiskey in less than 2 years, unless you just tweak existing whiskey already aged.
Still may have to try and track down a bottle or chase after that boat.

KeymasterIt’s been done for years Spidey. The recipe came from the movie Mr. Roberts.
