RPSC Travel sent me a note that as a winterover I had the option of sending some of my personal gear to the Pole at their expense via the USPS and the SAAM system. Up to seventy pounds above the 150 pound limit. I think SAAM is military cargo and stands for Special Assignment Airlift Mission. Does anyone have any experience using this service? I probably don’t have that much stuff to send, but it would be nice to have one less bag to drag if it is reliable, but I am having visions of my Teddy Bear ending up in Guam. 😉 Thx. Here is the exact quote:

o As a winterover employee, whether a primary or an alternate position, you have the option to take a third piece of checked baggage with you. Remember, only 150 pounds in total checked baggage is allowed to the Ice. If you would like to take a third piece of luggage with you, please let us know when you respond to this email and we will have an excess baggage coupon issued for you.

As an alternative, you can mail one 70 lb box (maximum) by U.S. Mail (SAAM). You will be reimbursed for it at Orientation via expense report submittal. This will prevent you from having to carry this excess baggage through the airports.

The Air Force C-17 flights that support the USAP are all SAAM missions, so you should not have any problem.
