Does anyone have information on the new baggage rules?  I have called the airlines and get a different answer everytime.   I was told that since I am arriving in LA at 11:00 am and do not leave for Auckland until 8:40 that I cannot check my bags straight through to Auckland from my departure airport. This has been a great convenience to me not having to deal with retrieving bags in LA and then re-check them on Quantas after 2:00pm.  If I would have known this, I would have asked them to change my ticket before they purchased it.  Does anyone know about this?

It’s the first I’ve heard of this. To be honest though, I don’t know if I would trust the airlines so much to hold on to them all day long and then get them on the right plane. I’ll be coming from Denver so I hope I can check mine all the way through.

I worked for United for 5 1/2 years.  There’s a rule about checking bags – if the layover is more than four hours, you’re supposed to collect, then recheck your bags.  There is some leeway on this, but for the most part, sounds like they’re trying to enforce it.

An airline’s baggage room sets-up containers, or carts, for flights, so as the bags come down the conveyor, they can be placed in the correct flight’s train.  If your flight is eight hours down the road, then your bag just has to sit there, and wait till its train is ready to be filled.

What else do you you have to do in LA?  Go to the beach???  😉

When you check-in at the airport, plead ignorance.  Many times they’ll check it right on through.

If they won’t do it, find storage lockers at LAX, and keep them there till later.  Then, head over to the beach.

Atlas, If they check it through early, will that mean the bags are sitting on the floor at the destination airport all day long? I would think that would greatly increase the odds of somebody missing them and having them miss the next flight.
