Canadian looking for work in Antarctica

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

My name is Persis and im 22 and from Winnipeg,Manitoba Canada. Im currently trying to find employment in Antarctica (any base or location) as a cook.

I am currently in the process of trying to contact someone in Raytheon to find out if they will consider my resume if I obtain a US working visa. I’ve had no luck in getting a response yet.

Im getting a tiny bit discouraged, as everywhere I have researched seems to say that you will probably need to be a US citizen (or British, Australian) to work down there. I am determined to find a way to get down there and work in the kitchen! Im healthy, a great cook (almost 5 years of restaurant cooking experience) and in excellent physical shape! I have a lot to offer and im very accustomed to living in a very cold climate (lived in North West Territories!).

Can anyone give me hope that I might be able to work in Antarctic (as a cook) even though im Canadian? Is there another company I should contact? Perhaps a Chef that I should contact?

Hi Miss Persis,

The company will go out of its way to hire non-US citizens if they can’t find any good US applicants. Unfortunately, as I understand the situation, this mostly means trade professionals such as plumbers and electricians — people who can earn a much better salary in the states than in Antarctica. So RPSC has the option of hiring foreign nationals under those circumstances (mostly Kiwis I guess).

So for you… Hmmm. Not so good. But wait! I think if you get a “green card”, that is a work visa for the US, they can hire you just as easily as anyone else. This is all heresay, of course, because I haven’t done it myself, so you should confirm it first before going through all that work.

Another option, possibly better: work on a tourist ship?

By the way, isn’t Canada a Commonwealth country? Couldn’t you work for the Brits? As an American I’m not sure how that all works but perhaps it’s another possibility.
