Can anyone give me some info on pros and cons of what hotels to stay in while i’m in Christ Church. The Raytheon packet list about 30 different ones. Do people ever just stay in the hostiles? What are those like.

Any of the less expensive places will do fine. My standby is the YMCA. I think you will find a large number of people staying there. Thomas’s is a little more expensive but has a kitchen if you want to do your own cooking. There are a number of reasonably priced B+B’s. Most are no more than 5 or 6 big city blocks from the center of town. I can’t think of the name of theone we stay at, maybe later I’ll remember. They serve a full breakfast each morning to their guests
I think it’s best to get one in town and not out by the airport as you will probably be socializing a bit.
The patron bar of the Antarctic Program is Baileys bar. It’s on the square across from the cathedral. No doubt you will find a number of people heading to the ice there. The other place you might find some ice people is Dux Deluxe. It’s down the street from the Y and has good food and bands.
You will have an opportunity to make friends all the way from the airport in LA to the Antarctic Center. Buddy up with someone who has been down before. Christchurch is full of wonderful restaurants. Carry a raincoat. It can be wet at this time of year.

Well it all depends on the weather. I wouldn’t count on having time in Cheech on your way down. Do your siteseeing at the end of the season. Murphy’s law says if you planned on shopping there for last minute items then your flight will be on time. On the other hand it’s not unheard of to be delayed for a week.
The routine will be ,day one arrive in cheech and possibly get your ecw gear. Day two fly to the ice leaving at 6am or so.
Sometimes you get an extra day. day two get gear and day 3 fly. That’s a little nicer because you have time to explore.
If the weather is bad and if you’r e lucky they’ll let you know before you go to the antarctic center at four in the morning, but again don’t count on it. You may get there, dress and wait around half the day until they cancel the flight.
A more likely scenario are boomerang flights. Basically the weather is iffy but there is a chance you can get in. The flight launches and goes out to the PSR-point of safe return. Here is where they make the decision on whether to proceed. If you are on a jet the psr is basically just before Ross Island. A five hour flight out and another five hours back only to repeat it the next day. Not likely but it’s also not uncommon to have up to 4 or 5 boomerang flights before you can get in.
Still it’s another free night in cheech so enjoy.

Windsor is the place I was trying to think of. When we get off the ice we always try to stay there a few days. If we are in town for weeks we will move over to the Y to save money.
