MemberJust wondering if the coffeehouse will be open for the next summer season. It was closed when I left earlier this year.

ModeratorYes, it’s supposed to be open this coming summer. Last year, the heavy snows we had ended up collapsing the flat, plywood roof over the restrooms, and storage room. Extensive repairs were done, including the entryway shell, which pushed the reopening date back. Well, along comes the ship, then along comes winter, and boom, no reopening.
The bastards. That’s the place where I hangout at. That’s two seasons in a row they closed it early. Bastards…
BTW, ‘womanonice’, do we know one another? C’mon, remove the mask.

ModeratorOh, and an ITT representative assured me that if they get the contract, the Coffee House will never be closed again…and it’ll get new furniture.
Promises were made.

MemberHahahaha, you guys. I am the woman who ran the deli the 2008 season. Well, at least until I had to go…….hopefully will be back this coming season….that is, if these old bones pq’s.
I am glad to hear the coffeehouse will still be there. I was afraid it would get torn down! I was not there all the time, but really liked to go there to relax at times. Great atmosphere!May 12, 2008 at 7:24 am #5491MightyAtlas

I’m the ‘handful of turkey, and a slice of ham.’
Returning to the Galley?May 12, 2008 at 7:31 am #5492thepooles98
KeymasterIf at all possible, I never go into Southern. That is the smokers bar. Sometimes your clothes stink just after walking by the door.
Gallaghers is alright, but I really don’t drink enough to have a good time there. At 54 the hearing is getting a bit hard and once the din rises, I can’t have a conversation there anyway.
IF aren’t a hard core partyier, there really isn’t anything better than the coffeehouse. It’s also a wine bar, but tends to be the place for people to meet and play cards or other games. It’s a gentler place that tends not to get out of hand very often.
And if you just really feel the need to hang out in a nice place there is almost always a jovial fellow or gal sitting at the end of the bar drinking his/her tea.
Atlas, can you ask the IT supervisor if they can turn on the network outlets on the other side of the room and turn off the ones by the tables. Everytime there is a card game, the tables with the connections are full and couches go empty.

KeymasterWhile you’re at it, have them put a Frosty-Boy machine in there so we can have ice cream drinks. Mmmmm!

ModeratorGlenn – They tried to do smoothies in there back in 04-05. Bombed big-time. Steal some from the Galley. Heck, we can barely keep that one up and running…
Mike – the ports are an ongoing issue. Rec has a big say in what ports are active. Remind me about it in four months.May 13, 2008 at 2:33 am #5495Been_There
MemberAnd for those of you reading, when I asked which ITT Rep Atlas had been speaking with about the Coffee House re-opening, he admitted it could have been the Lockheed Rep, or the EG&G Rep, or the Fluor Rep, or the Kellogg, Brown and Root, Rep, or the AECOM Rep………seems like Atlas is keeping his options open.
I am sure that NSF will make it clear that hiring the experienced and highly qualified USAP work force is key to future success of the contractor and the program. Believe it or not, sometimes those folks back at NSF have a clue.
Of course, I am sure the word is out amoung all the possible bidders on Atlas.

KeymasterSo I am assuming ITT is a company bidding for the USAP contract that ends in 2010. What happens if Raytheon loses the contract? How does that affect people working down there? Are the FT managers basically laid off and then rehired by the new contractor?

MemberAtlas,
It is Becca or even sometimes Bex. I HAVE been called Reba, but feel I am more a Becca or Bex.May 13, 2008 at 6:33 am #5498Been_There
MemberThe Antarctic support contract has changed each time it has come up for re-bid over the last forty years. Based on what I know, NSF has encouraged the successful bidder to try to hire as many experienced full time and contract personnel as possible to ensure a smooth turn over. Only the senior management tends to be new.
In some cases, folks that have been with the USAP for a long time, and others that have only been involved for shorter periods, like ten years or less, decide to move on to something else when the contract changes, or at least try. When RPSC took over from ASA they took the same office space in Denver to encourage folks to stay in the program. Would not be surprised if new bidders are not considering the same plan. So those that want to continue in the program should not be concerned, regardless of who is the contractor in 2010.
