KeymasterWell, basically nothing but a lack of info…as described in this http://enr.ecnext.com/coms2/article_bmfi090819AntarcticCon Engineering News Record article. And between the time when I collected the link and when I decided to post it here, their site went “down for maintenance” so maybe the link will work tomorrow.
This is basically no different from what I’ve been hearing all along…nothing.

MemberAnybody else notice that they have a picture of McMurdo there, with the caption saying that “South Pole research facilities have grown since the 1960s…”?

MemberUnfortunately most of the media and the general public for that matter, use the term Antarctica and South Pole as one in the same. That’s the more educated ones that al least know that Antarctica is NOT UP THERE! 😀 You will see it all the time.

MemberI hand my Dear Doctor letter to the receptionist and half an hour later when I see the doctor the first thing she says is, “So, you’re going to Alaska!”

KeymasterMradyfist, yeah, I too noticed that McMurdo picture, while I was unsuccessfully trying to click on the KBR billboard ad looking for a larger version 🙁 Yeah, I guess At least I’m glad to see the article link is working today.

KeymasterLatest news… The decision is delayed by a year.
I’m trying to find a related press release — unsuccessful so far. BT?

KeymasterWord on the street is that the contract has been awarded to Xe (formerly Blackwater)
/I’m going to make popcorn now and watch where this goes 😆

ModeratorOh, that’d be great.
Geesh…

KeymasterOkie-dokie, as yet there is no press release (that I know of).
Bidders were informed by letter. The key sentences in the letter:
Although a revised schedule will be published shortly, the Foundation does not currently anticipate an award until summer 2010. Consequently, the Foundation will be seeking a proposal from its incumbent contractor, Raytheon Technical Services Company LLC, Polar Services, for an additional twelve months of support services to the United States Antarctic Program, through March 31, 2011.
Darn. And I was really hoping for body armor and a sidearm with my Xe-issued ECW.

With Xe taking charge the term “psych test” will take on a whole new meaning. Personally I think all winterover Polies should be issued automatic weapons along with their fur ruffs and bunny boots. 🙂

MemberI truly hope Xe is a joke.
It’s run by a fundamentalist Christian, they’re under indictment, and they essentially guns for hire.

Memberdon’t panic, it was a joke… a good one.

MemberNote that NSF is “seeking a proposal from its incumbent contractor…for an additional twelve months”. Wonder what would happen if RPSC declined to propose? That sure would be interesting. Don’t mean to stir the pot. I seriously doubt that would happen.

MemberClearly, RPSC can hold them over a barrel if they feel like it. This whole thing seems very ineptly done by the NSF. The various contractors followed the guidelines, spent tons of money and time, bid in good faith, and now they have to do it all over again next year? Sounds like lawsuit territory to me.

KeymasterNSF spent a bunch of money too, that they’ll now have to spend again. Money that could have been used to send some more scientists over to the Pine Island Glacier, hire that extra shuttle bus driver or keep the greenhouse open.
Oh, that was our money.
