This is a nice little forum! Just happened onto it through a link somewhere. I wintered over at Mac Town 1988-89 😯 (was in the USN) then again for 1993-94 winter at Spole. I’ve bookmarked this site, and plan to visit often. 😀

As you probably know, there’s been a lot of changes at both Mactown and Spole since you were last there. Any thoughts about returning someday?

Yes, I’ve been sort of keeping up with the construction of the new Spole station, quite impressive! I will really miss the dome once they remove it, 😥 a true landmark. As for MacTown, it was growing and changing by leaps and bounds even back when I was stationed there.

I am always thinking about returning there some day. Our WO crew at Spole was a good one (only 27) and it would be tough not having the familiar faces around again.

Oh! Check out my website (link below my post)…I threw it together quickly (pardon the mess) last summer, in anticipation of a 10 year reunion that we had. Sorry about the rambling that I do, but there are some photos in the galleries as well. I may add more photos and descriptions from our time on the ice, if I can find the time.

Well, I too am keeping up with the construction of the new station, in fact that happens to be my job this winter 🙂

Since the comms building/library is supposed to be torn down as early as next winter, I’ve been scanning and photographing the stuff on the walls, just in case it might disappear for awhile before it finds its way into the new elevated station. I wish there was a central place like the stairway at Palmer where the photos could be displayed and seen.

I actually like the 93-94 winterover picture on your web site much better than the one that is down here…but I did spend some time trying to dust it off a bit (well, Photoshop)…anyway:

Thanks for taking the time to save (scan) those crew photos on the library walls! 😥 Sad to see that place go…lots of good times had in the lounge, like ‘Black Adder night’ on wednesday nights, where Doc Bob would show us two of the shows each week. 😀 Hopefully someone can find a nice empty wall to display all the previous crew photos.

😛 eek! I can’t believe you posted that crew picture, that has my dorky high school photo attached! LOL! I was working mids when they redid the crew photo 😳 so that was the only thing I could come up with at the time, hehe! Photography has evolved over the years, so digital cameras make life a lot easier.

Hi Fallstar,
I also just happened onto this site. I wintered at Williams ArOpFac a tad earlier than you. I was one of those Seabeses in MCB Special the started construction at McMurdo in Dec. 1955, wintered in ’56 with 92 others and in Nov. ’56, 24 of us went to the pole to begin construction there. I gained life long friendships with most of those guys and stay in close contact with several. It’s been a long time and sure wish I could go back to visit but, only in the summer season.

The Air Force got alot of coverage in the press about the flight with night vision equipment. Will make it alot easier for the winter crew at McMurdo if they have to pull someone out during the winter but the Pegasus runway has approach lights and other stuff now. Not like back in the 60’s when VX-6 flew in to Byrd to pull out someone and in 1967 when they did planned missions to McMurdo in June so some science types could go in to do winter diving!

What I found interesting about the article, is that this flight occurred in early September…if I recall correctly, we already had WinFly by that time, and it was light enough out, not sure how they used “night vision” goggles to their benefit. But you’re right, it will definitely come in handy for special winter fly-ins. 🙂

Still plenty of darkness in September. They launched from NZ to arrive at McMurdo when it was “night”.
