Hey at all,
I try to find out who was working on the trail marker near Roll Gage Mary were the Geocache “Goodview” was buried. (Now it is missing inclusive all the TBs.) Maybe one of you guys was involved or knows something about any trail maintenance work out there.

I went up to the geocache site last week and the cache is indeed missing. I haven’t quite given up hope, but I am not optimistic either. I contacted the person in charge of the people who did the maintenance on the track this year and he was not aware it was missing. The cache is located on a ridge that is extremely windy. We anchored it underneath rocks, but if someone removed the rocks, it may have blown down the hill. It’s pretty steep and drops off onto the ice, so we are generally prohibited from walking off the trail in that area. When it warms up a little I may see if I can get downhill and see if it is there. Until then consider the cache missing in action.I searched for this cache with a friend on Nov 11 with no success. Returned two weeks later after a good melt had occurred for a second look and still found no traces anything was ever there. I don’t know if trail maintenance was before or after my day at goodview but something happened here.

thanks for your respond. Perhaps it will not be neccesary to watch for the box if it was taken by a trail maintenance crew. How is the chance to find out who was working on the trail? As far as I have heard every team or hiker which is moving out of the station has to have a permit given from the station leading team. May this was recorded in some kind of list.
If there will be a safe chance to look for the box downhill that´s fine, if not that´s also fine because Safety first! A cache box is not worth any lost of health or even life.

EnricoHate to rain on this parade but unless you have an ACA Permit, you should not be leaving anything in the field. I know it’s pretty silly, looking over at McMurdo, but that’s the new rules. I have no idea what a geocache is but just be aware that you could be called to task on this one.

Geocaching is a bit like a scavenger hunt. Boxes are hidden around the world and the GPS coordinates are placed on http://www.geocaching.com People travel the world trying to find these things. It’s extremely popular.
McM has several which are mostly in cargo yards. With passengers on ships, science groups, McM and Polies all looking for these things, it was no surprise that we asked about ours, the winter NSF mgr asked that it be put someplace that was accessable and safe. We chose to put it inside the existing trail cairn next to Roll Cage Mary. The NSF rep and the RPSC rep both agreed and it became the first approved Geocache. Nobody said anything about permits.
I know the trail cairn is already permitted. The geocache box may have just been considered part of the cairn. Do I need to check this out before replacing the box?Mike,
You shoud direct your questions to the OPP ACA Permit Officer. My concern may be unfounded but that’s were you should go for an official reading. That’s were I would have gone with the question if it crossed desk at McMurdo.
BTI recall a non-ice someone in 06′ (I think) asking about placing one around spole and the answer was a huge resounding ‘no’ with all sorts of references to the antarctic treaty and RPSC policies. But at mcm, I guess it might be a different story….I cant remember if that was on here or on one of the polie blogs…
We’re actually putting a Terra Cache here at Pole this year. It will be located in Comms though. So no treaty breaking.
I cant see the big deal about leaving a geocache behind. I am also an avid Cacher and have been to a lot of different places to find them. After working on the pipeline project here in McMurdo this year and seeing the objects that this very same government has buried into the ground, a geocache would be the least of there worries. people who enjoy this hobby are often very respectful of the areas and often bring out whatever trash they find on the way. But this is typical NSF buracracy hard at work.
I’m planning on putting it back. All I need is a heavy metal box. The old one was a tool box. Most of that stuff has been retro’d out by now. I still think the other one might have blown down the hill, but it’s an off limits area and I’m not going down to check. I pass the area on my lunchtime hike most days, so if anyone has something heavy and large enough for a few trinkets, pass it on and I’ll reestablishe the cache.
MikeGood/bad news. I took a pair of binoculors up to the spot where we hid the geocache. We could see it has blown down the hill and cliff and is sitting on a precarious chunk of ice just off of the cliff. I don’t see much way to retrieve it short of getting the SAR team involved and going down with ropes. I’ll ask but I think it’s doubtful they will retrieve it.

first of all I would like to thank you for all the effort you put on this cache. In my opinion it is verry unlikely that a SAR team will have a look for the downblown cache.
And in addition to that I do not think that there are all the other TBs still inside. Luckily one of them was found on the Ice but lets see what the SAR Team leader says. If he or she agrees then it would be the first Search and Rescue operation for a cache and some TBs in Antarctica.
If they do not agree mind you if I send you another TB to put in the reloaded Goodview cache?Greetings from Germany

Don’t you have your fishing pole with you???You could put a heavy magnet from the Heavy shop on the Fishing line, or even a long rope, and spend a Sunday Fishing!!! Gee just like at home… kick off your shoes, enjoy the sun, keep casting, you might catch it!!!

If it wasn’t so close to station close I would send you down a 50 cal ammo can, they seal up tight, are heavy and would be perfect for a geo-cash. If you would like I can pick up some and mail them down for next season, just email me and let me know…I will be glad to donate them to the cause Mike! Just let me know how many cans you want. (be reasonable now, remember I am on a pension) I will Mail them down for next season, just let me know where you will be working at down there next season.
