hi all,tomorrow i deploy to the r/v nathaniel b palmer. iʹve been on the ships before, but only visiting or being transported. this will be my first voyage as a member of the crew. my job will be network admin.itʹs something new for meǃ it was time to try something different and ship work was one of the last frontiers. speaking of which… what excites me most about this cruise is that weʹll be going to some very remote areas, places that few people on earth have ever seen: the bellingshausen sea and maybe the amundsen sea too, off the coast of west antarctica. if we see ʹpeter iʹ island first-hand i think iʹll just croak — itʹs been on my dream list for years.cheers,glenn
yes, definitely keep us postedǃin 1989-90 i talked my supervisors into letting me transit from mcmurdo to palmer on the polar duke, which was scheduled to visit peter i island among other remote places.unfortunately, this boondoggle didnʹt happen since i needed to stay at pole until station closing to finish stuff. plus folks started to figure out that this might be the ultimate boondoggle.so i had to travel from pole to palmer the traditional way via the usa and the home office. still made it in 14 daysǃ
iʹm in punta arenas, chile. we returned earlier than anticipated because there was a fire in one of the biolab rooms on the nbp. thankfully nobody was hurt. the fire gutted the one lab room, but the smoke and soot spread through the 00 level of the ship, especially the e-lab and forward and aft dry labs. the e-lab has all the servers and lan equipment (and my office, naturally), and virtually all of that equipment was coated in soot.weʹve been in pa for several days now and may be here for a couple more, cleaning up the ship. most of my time is spent cleaning the soot out of computers. some work afterwards. some do not. all are of dubious reliability now, even if they work. itʹs a mess.glenn
glenn,well it looks like your new adventure got off to less than an ideal start. at least you got to stop by palmer station for pizza. is the science cruise canncelledʔ i assume so at this point.been there
bt -the science cruise has been in limbo for quite a while. the scientists are eager (can i use that wordʔ) to extend the cruise and continue, and most didnʹt want to come back pa in the first place. there have been issues.there was supposed to be a big conference call pow-wow this morning concerning cruise continuation but i havenʹt heard the results.g
