I’m hearing through the grapevine, that if the Gov’t shutdown continues much longer, the program will be forced into caretaker status with just over 100 people allowed to stay.

Hey Mike, I hope that with this shutdown you still have a ranger job.

Nope, I’ve been furloughed along with almost everyone else in the National park service. I hope it doesn’t shut down the Program. At the end of this I go back to work. Canceled Antarctic seasons might not.

Well, today is the first day they might make a decision to abandon the summer season. Keep your fingers crossed.

Does the house resolution guaranteeing back pay not apply to non-NSF personnel?

No furloughs, no back pay here.

What’s going to happen is that many support staff will lose their jobs. Most of the science will be canceled. Research will be set back or ruined. Careers will be damaged, graduate degrees delayed or halted, and a huge amount of time, effort, and money wasted.

    We’re hosed.

At least one of my friends is stranded in Christchurch with no money. last I heard he was sleeping on the beach under a tarp and looking for a tent. He is waiting there to see if his wife is also going to be let go as well. So sad
