ModeratorKimmy —
Physicals can be pretty detailed, depending on what season you’re trying to PQ (physically qualify) for. Summer is fairly tolerant, since it’s easy to get a flight up to Christchurch, or back home. Winter, however, is pretty rigorous, since there’s no flights to/from for six months.
You’ll typically be asked to give up about five vials of blood, have a chest x-ray, an EKG, and your physician will go through a list of things he needs to look at. There’s also the ‘private parts’, but that’s another story.
Cholesterol and triglycerides are things that typically catch most folks.
You’ll also need to visit a dentist, get x-rays, and a complete exam. Any problems will need to be fixed before you can PQ.
Medical provides each participant with a check-list of what needs to be done/examined/tested.
The paperwork you have to do for all this will challenge your mental skills, so they figure if you can get through it all, you’re worthy of a plane trip south.

MemberBe sure to make copies of everything. DHQ loses, misplaces or screws up half the paperwork every year.
If your doctor or dentist is up to date with digital recordkeeping, remember DHQ still will need paper.

KeymasterKimmy,
Read through the older stuff on this board for more info about physicals. As for the checklist, Atlas is right, look at it closely to see if they missed something that you need to get done. When I did that, I noticed that they missed something. And don’t underestimate the dental part, it almost did me in as well.
What’s up? Do you have a job offer, are you just thinking of applying or ??

KeymasterKimmy the physicals are analogous to a physical you would get as an astronaut. They will take numerous vials of blood and perform an ungodly number of tests on everything you can think of. Once they have the blood results, the will look at x-rays, blood pressure, EKG, and other items and then decide if you need further tests. The process is long and very time consuming. If you are applying for a job in October, then the minute you get your paperwork, you need to be in the doctors office. Maybe even warn your doctor ahead of time that you will need a slot.

KeymasterI think I said analagous, not exact. Bottom line, this physical is more intense than you are likely to get going for a normal yearly exam.
