I’m sorry, I don’t know where this should go, so I’ll give this topic a shot.

I am wondering what the status is of the old come at South Pole, and what will become of it once the demolition is completely. Apparently some years back, there was some talk of it’s becoming part of a museum somewhere.

    Does anybody know?

Thanks for your patience with a newbie! 😀

I assume you mean “dome” and not “comms,” which is demo’d and gone.

Status of the Dome is undecided. The current official plan, near as I can tell, is to pull the Dome apart and send it to the Seabees museum in California (I think). But with current construction and other priorities it might be a few years before it’s removed. Many of us who actually spend time here think it should be relocated back to a surface spot and converted into warehouse space. It would retain it’s iconish status and serve a useful purpose. But people who don’t spend time here dealing with the mess of cargo everywhere are making the decisions.

Thanks, yeah, I meant the Dome. I’m glad to hear that it’s still there. It sure seemed to me that y’all could use the storage space from what I’ve read. The new base looks heavenly by comparison, but somehow that dome is supposed to be there…

I work for the gov, and yes, practicality never seems to enter into decision making. However, inertia does, and since it would consume lots of resources to knock it apart and move it, hopefully it will keep getting moved to the back burner until the bureaucrats just forget about it.

    Thanks for your reply!

if by “heavenly” you mean like an office complex in Denver … it’s comfortable — and sterile — like a cubicle

I’m such a weenie; I was thinking about physical temperature. But I have great faith in you guys — you’ll decorate it appropriately! It just takes a while to get the feel of the place. 🙂

Meanwhile, I’m not as worried about y’all as I have been — worried that your feet will freeze while you sleep and your toes will fall off.

Hmmm….does that go along with polar bears and Eskimos? 😀
