Hi! I’m currently a college student, but I’m hoping to go to Antarctica for the summer season starting this coming September or October. Unfortunately, since I won’t graduate until March I don’t have much work experience. I’ve had various part-time jobs in restaurants, offices, as a driver for campus security, and currently as a domestic violence counselor. But nothing like the full year or more of full-time work experience that all the posted jobs on Rayjobs seem to require. Does anyone know if there are things for the inexperienced? I have outdoor experience (leading backpacking trips for groups on campus and wilderness first aid training) and I will soon be a certified EMT. And I’m willing to take any job at all…

My major is international relations, unfortunately entirely unrelated, though I would be happy to do any grunt science work that is available–I used to work at a lab in high school. I would love a job that would allow me to be outside sometimes.

Oo. Be careful what you ask for! (You may get it.)
The basic, unskilled labor job that most people apply for is General Assistant, or GA. You’d be outside quite a lot doing gawd-knows-what. But competition is fierce for those positions.
If you know something about carpentry — if you can swing a hammer without hitting your thumb — go for Carpenter Assistant.
Other possible options: shuttle driver or fuels. That last position, “fuelie”, is not very glamorous but the fuelies seem to have a good time and they’ll train you on the job (you just have to be able to tolerate smelling like JP-8 diesel all the time). There are also some logistics and warehouse positions that you could probably qualify for but I don’t know if they’d get you outside very much.
Maybe some others on the board will also offer some suggestions. My best advice is to apply for anything and everything that looks like fun, regardless of whether you think you’re qualified or not.

You might also want to try for Assistant Lab Manager (either a summer or winter position). They generally look for some real experience doing lab management… but ya never know, they may be willing to give you a shot.
Go back and look at all the posts dealing with getting hired. You have a lot going for you , but you also need to cut through the mass of everyone else applying. If you can go to the Denver Job Fair in March, do it. The entry level jobs are GA’s Dining Attendents (DA), Shutlle drivers and Janitors. Dining and shuttles pretty much require that you have worked the job before. You have those two covered already. At the job fair apply for everything you think you would like. In general they never find qualified people for lots of jobs and are forced to take people like yourself and train them. To get there you have to impress someone.
We’ll give you more hints once the job fair gets a little closer.
