KeymasterOk, the unavoidable question……..not that this will affect whether or not I go south, but does anyone know about how much money I’d be making as a cook in McMurdo?…….Just curious……my internet access is limited so it would be great if someone emailed me at funkyjoe@bassplayer.cc Also, I have a friend who wants to come to the ice with me, but he’s diabetic…….Is this a problem?………Thanks. Peace everybody!

KeymasterLet’s talk Turkey.
The honest answer is that it depends. There are a wide range of galley jobs from dishwashers , salad cooks, prep cooks and all the way up to executive chef. If you haven’t been a resturant cook someplace before you probably won’t get a job as cook at McMurdo. Pay scales vary from minimum wage up.
The funny thing though is that for most people you can’t compare the same wage here as back home. Since most everything in the way of living expenses are provided for you, there isn’t much to spend money on. If you are really smart you get rid of your house /apartment or rent it out while you are gone. Everything that you would have spent is now money in your pocket. No auto insurance, electric, water, sewer, gasoline, rent, etc.
So imagine making minimum wage at home, but not having to pay for anything. All of it goes in the bank. That’s what you get down here. Most all of us make less per hour than we would back home doing the same job, however, most of us also bank more down here than we would back home as well.
The other nice side benefit is travel. When you leave you get a free ticket home from New Zealand. You can delay the ticket and travel for a while if you want. Nothing like starting your vacation in Christchurch and not have to worry about paying for airplane tickets.

MemberHi, Mike:
I’m curious about the last part … “You can delay the ticket and travel for a while if you want. Nothing like starting your vacation in Christchurch and not have to worry about paying for airplane tickets.” How does that work? How long do you have until you have to return? Are there any additional costs? If I can, I’d like to spend about a month total in Australia and NZ before returning home.
Thanks,

KeymasterYou can spend a year if you want to. Since we are all contract here, once the season is over there is no obligation to return right away. Many people trade in their tickets for an around the world ticket. Basically, you can fly home whenever and the trip is paid for. If you want to fly somewhere else they credit the airfair from the programs ticket toward whatever you want. Since they buy the tickets wholesale, if you make other stops you will have to pay out of your pocket for the difference, but if you want to play in New Zealand for a few months the ticket home won’t cost you anything.Last year Lorie and I got out in Mid October, flew to Aukland and the North island of New Zealand for a couple of weeks. Then we went to Australia for 6 weeks before heading home to california for xmas. We then went to New Orleans and then on to Baltimore and the whole thing cost us about 500 dollars each.

MemberHey Mike….you might add the $500.00 was for your tickets only, not all
meals and lodging unless you REALLY got lucky.Rick

KeymasterYup, it’s just the airfair. But traveling can be pretty inexpensive once you get the hang of it. Hostels should cost you somewhere around 20 dollars a night for two people. Hostels take some getting used to. You sleep in rooms with other people, not something you see much in the states. Most give you an option to get a private room for a little more money. If you are staying somewhere for a week or more look at weekly or monthly rates. In Australia we had a studio beach house for a month. The cost was 350 Austrailian which was a little over 200 dollars a week US. Full kitchen, laundry, cable tv, phone, pool, and just a short walk over the dunes from the beach. It was more than staying in the local hostel but it was nice having our own place for five weeks. This year we are moving a bit more.Hitting some more of the south sea tropical islands that we missed when we sailed across the ocean a few years ago.

MemberThanks, Mike. I’m applying for my Australian visa in a few days. We can do it electronically now. I’m posting a couple other questions under another forum name. Please check that out when you get a minute.
Thanks,
