iʹm wondering if mcmurdo staff would be open to receiving massage therapy. i have been hired to work as a janitor for the summer season (iʹm still waiting to get pqed) but in real life i am a massage therapist and have been working full time in spas, resorts, and clinics for the last 14 years. i am trained in lots of different massage modalities– swedish massage, deep tissue, foot reflexology, reiki, craniosacral therapy and myofascial release. i would like to bring my massage table (unless there is already one there) and offer massage to staff in my free time. i will be working 54 hours a week, so i would most likely have the time and energy to give 3-5 massages a week. iʹve been thinking that so many people there do heavy physical labor for long hours and most likely have sore muscles. iʹm assuming that a lot of folks there would love to be able to receive a massage.i have a few questions:1) are staff open to having massage therapyʔ2) are there any other massage therapists offering massage in mcmurdoʔ3) is there a massage table there or should i bring mineʔ or maybe there is a carpenter there who could build me a tableʔ (he or she would get free massage in exchange)4) would it be really expensive and inconvenient to have a massage table shipped thereʔ (my table weighs about 22 pounds)5) how much would staff be willing to pay for a massageʔ ( here in colorado i charge $50 an hour)iʹd be interested in hearing your responses, thanksǃ

hiya mountainwoman,iʹm hoping some of the other ʹregularsʹ on this board will answer too, but in the mean time hereʹs my thoughts…> 1) are staff open to having massage therapyʔsure thingǃ> 2) are there any other massage therapists offering> massage in mcmurdoʔyup, at least one. his nameʹs atlas.> 3) is there a massage table there or should i bring mineʔatlas could answer that better than i could, but chances are thereʹs something you could use. if not, the next best bet is to mail one down to yourself.> or maybe there is a carpenter there who could build me> a tableʔ (he or she would get free massage in exchange)uh, yes but it would have to be ʹunder the tableʹ, pardon the pun. theyʹd have to do it on their own time (what there is of it) and with scavenged materials. it could take a while.> 4) would it be really expensive and inconvenient to have> a massage table shipped thereʔ (my table weighs about 22 pounds)no. us mail does a great job, assuming theyʹll take a package that big. probably around $30 parcel post, but thatʹs just a guess. you may be able to ups it as well which might work better.> 5) how much would staff be willing to pay for a massageʔ> ( here in colorado i charge $50 an hour)hmm. i dunno.glenn

mountainwoman,hi, i am a massage therapist who spent 4 years in mcmurdo. after my first season, i spent the off season in massage school, as i saw what a great opportunity massage therapy was down there. anyway, for the next 3 seasons i kept quite busy with massages down there. your skills will be very widely welcomed down there, and youʹll have the opportunity to do as many massages as you want (usually all of us massage therapists are turning down business…). anyway, here are specific answers to your questions:1) are staff open to having massage therapyʔ > absolutelyǃ2) are there any other massage therapists offering massage in mcmurdo. > yes, but as for how many varies each year as to who is there. there always seemed to be plenty enough business for all of us, and we would refer business to each other (and do trades with each other).3) is there a massage table there or should i bring mineʔ or maybe there is a carpenter there who could build me a tableʔ (he or she would get free massage in excout. > there may be a table or two floating around down there, but i recommend bringing your own. the bigger issue seems to be space: where do you give your massages atʔ i know that several therapists in the past have shared a table in the barber shop, in the evenings after the barber shop is closed. iʹm not sure who the barber will be this year (does anyone know if ruth is coming back), but thatʹs something that needs to be coordinated with them. luckily, you work in the same dept as the barber (station services). anyway, i brought my table with me (well, sent it down ahead of time), and was glad that i had my own. i was lucky enough to be able to do the massages out of my dormroom. that really depends on your roomate (either bribing them with massages to stay out of the room when youʹre doing massages, or them having a strange work schedule that works out with when you do massages). or since youʹre a first year person with the lowest job senority, you might not have the best housing set up. if you live in mmi, you wonʹt have room to set up a table, even if you have an accomadating roomate. there might be room if you live in hotel cal. if you end up in 155, youʹll have 3 other roomates, and itʹll be nearly impossible to work around their schedules. of course you wonʹt know where youʹll be living until you actually get down there. 4) would it be really expensive and inconvenient to have a massage table shipped thereʔ (my table weighs about 22 pounds) > i had mine shipped down, and it was worth it. it cost me about $75 to mail it. i sent it down in sept, and it got there about a week before haloween. 5) how much would staff be willing to pay for a massageʔ ( here in colorado i charge $50 an hour) > charge what you normally charge. i charged $50/hr, and that was what most everyone was charging. i think one person was charging $60/hr. let me know if you have any more questions. feel free to email me directly. my email is: <ǃ-- e -->zzzondee@hotmail.com<ǃ-- e -->zondra
