KeymasterDoes anyone know why the McMurdo webcam has not been working since the start of winfly? Has the site address been changed? If so, anyone know what it is?

KeymasterI noticed that as well. I’ll ask around and see if anyone knows. My guess is that it is a bandwith issue. We have what would be comparable to a home dsl connection here that is shared by 1000 people. When you get too many on at the same time the internet speeds grind to a turtles pace. They have been looking at internet usages that can be cut back to conserve space and the webcam may be one of them.
Atlas?

KeymasterI wrote to the webmaster (email address listed on the page) at the beginning of the month and he (Johnny Le) responded: “The station has some network hardware problems. As soon as they fix the network hardware problems, I will reboot it. Thank you for contacting us and please keep checking the site.”
Who is “they?”

KeymasterI asked some IT nerds about it and they said there is a part that was ordered and is not yet on Station.

Come on over to 120 and you can experience first-hand a ‘nerd’ kicking your ass.
🙂
Besides, if you really feel compelled to call us anything, go with ‘geeks’.

KeymasterGeek works for me. In any case it just means that you guys know a lot about things that we can only wish we knew a little about. In fact, how you can learn this stuff and remember it, befuddles me. While geek ect. sounds bad, the word to describe the rest of us ignorant souls would be much worse. Not printable in a family oriented message board..

MemberActually, geeks is the accepted nomenclature.
Nerds are those freaky people that are up at 2:00am coding a program naked. Not that there is anything wrong with being up at 2:00am (especially naked) but coding…that means you’re a nerd, not a geek……November 10, 2004 at 5:12 pm #2269brendanstamp05
MemberI’m a geek, I have a hammer made for fixing bugs as well. Can I be in IT?

MemberSure….We’re all about percussive maintenance (especially if we’ve pulled an all-nighter fixing the mail server.

KeymasterJust got this from the web master:
SORRY!
Despite our efforts to revive it, the live webcam at McMurdo is permantly
down. It was installed in 2000 and has lasted a little over 4 years.
Considering the harsh conditions of Antartica, it was often suprising to
us that the webcam had lasted that long.>From the comments we got about the webcam, we know how much it meant to
some people to have this window into the lives of friends and family at
McMurdo and we regret not being able to bring it back. May all those who
venture to Antartica achieve their aims and return safe and sound.
Sincerely,Johnny

MemberIf you can’t fix it, get a bigger hammer.
Pity its down, can another camera be substituted in its place or are they just gonna give up on the idea because of bandwidth and such?
I know there are a few here who have cams with them, mine was packed with my laptop by mistake, and I am sure most would not have a problem with donating one, I wouldn’t but I doubt that the cams would last long even if indoors looking out through a window. -
