Hi, I will be graduating soon from college in Medical Technology, and I’m interested in trying to find a job in Antarctica.  Raytheon has a job posted on it’s website for a Medical Technician (my future field) at McMurdo.

So I was hoping someone here could tell me what the healthcare system is like down there.  And, what are some of the health problems/diseases people get while on the ice.

    Thanks,

    Kwayzar

It depends on where you are going. McMurdo has a clinic. During the winter we usually have a Doctor, a PA and a PT. Pole has a doctor.
During the summer it’s a happening place. Nurses, med techs, doctors, dentists, x-ray techs. Apply for anything that might work for you.

We get a pretty good physical before going down that eliminates a lot of people with serious diseases. What we do get is the flu and colds. People are traveling all over the world before coming to MCM. They bring everything in and it spreads throughout the community. It happens every year and our name for it is the Crud.
There are also lots of sport injuries, pulled muscles, broken bones.  Beyond that there is confidentiality that stops us from hearing the details.

Thanks for the reply.  That’s about what I was expecting, a lot of flu like diseases and general accident type injuries.  I’m thinking if I can get my EMT, Emergency Medical Technician, certification it’ll probably boost my chances of getting a position.

I won’t be able to apply for a position for about a year, I’ll still in school, but hopefully some day in the near future I’ll make it down there.

    Thanks,

    Kwayzar

The EMTs all work for the fire dept. Try applying there as well.
