KeymasterThey certainly aren’t doing a very good job of announcing this…

KeymasterOh no.
It looks like it is true.
Msn is giving an option to move the groups sites intact to a new company. I haven’t looked at the details, but will have to figure out how when the time comes. I might rely on some of you IT advisors to give me a hand.

KeymasterHmm. I took a quick look through “Multiply.com”. It looks like the usual blog/webpage/facebook/flicker social site. People can post comments on blog entries, photos and whatnot, but I didn’t see a good discussion board format. Perhaps I missed it…

KeymasterWe’ll see what happens.
I read it as the group content is supposed to transfer as is.
It looks at the moment like the conversion tool isn’t working. I think it’s best to wait a bit and let them work out the bugs.October 26, 2008 at 3:08 am #6054skua77
KeymasterYeah, Mike, I agree…all I see so far is lots of talk. They need to get a sample up and running properly so we can see what it looks like.
I guess the MSN folks figure there’s more money to be made with the new site selling photos and ads or whatever ??

KeymasterHello everyone! I just signed up but have been reading these posts for a good year now. Just wanted to say, where ever the group is moved to, I hope it continues in the same capacity. I have high hopes of someday working on the ice but due to my current circumstances with school I do not plan on attempting for a few more years. I hope to continue to read all of your posts after the group has been moved as I really enjoy everything you all have to offer. Reading your posts has only intensified my desire to someday make it to the ice. Thanks for posting all the great information!

KeymasterGlenn, Atlas, Chris, Allen—
or any of you other computer geeks.
I guess we have to buckle down and migrate. Anyone want to help me with this?
I still think we should wait awhile till the bugs are worked out, but at least we should be thinking of what path to follow.

KeymasterAll these posts are good information (with the exception of one thread…) It’d be a shame to lose them.
Have you tried creating a group on “Multiply”? Perhaps give it a go and see how it works. They have an import tool that lets you import content from another group site (like MSN) but I have no idea how it will handle discussion group posts…
If that doesn’t work, hmmm… punt?

KeymasterShould we just shut down and move everything to your groups, glenn? Keep the discusion boards and do away with the photos?

KeymasterHey Mike. Gee, thanks for the thought. But I don’t have any way of importing the discussions here (which I think is important). And behind the scenes, my board will probably go away entirely soon because the hosting provider isn’t going to support SQL4 after December (which is what it uses) and I don’t have time to convert it to SQL5 or even support the board at all. Battling porno-spam problems ends up taking too much time and effort. Perhaps
So that’s a long way of saying I don’t think I can do it.
I have another suggestion but don’t want to post it here — I’ll send it in an email.

MemberSo what is going to be the fate of the board? Does anyone know? It’s down to 1 month. We’re not just going to disperse are we? I would hate to see all of this to come to an end.

KeymasterYou might try Lefora. They are advertising that you can easil import MSN discussion boards. (Disclaimer: I haven’t tried Lefora and know very little about them.)

KeymasterWell I guess I have to do something. I’ve been putting it off, but are running out of time. I’m clueless to the options. Not enough of a geek I guess. Glenn, Have you or anyone else checked out the Multiply site? Any chance you have some time to help me figure it out?
MJanuary 5, 2009 at 12:54 am #6063Sciencetech
KeymasterHey Mike, I looked at Multiply. It looks like more of a blogging/social site — there’s a simplistic blogging function that will allow other users to make entries, but I didn’t see a discussion board function. After that, I gave up on Multiply.
I’d try Lefora. If you want me to experiment I’ll have a go at it and see how it works. Lemme know.

KeymasterHey Mike, I took another look at Lefora and, well, didn’t care for what I saw. Their interface looks amateurish. I won’t write them off yet, but I think I have something better…
Yuku.com is offering to migrate MSN discussion boards. Their discussion board format is clean, similar to Iceboard, and they’ll do it for you (although they can’t promise anything). You have to email them. See this web page:
http://support.yuku.com/topic/10785/t/Introducing-MSN-migrations.html
Since you’re the owner of AntarcticMemories you’ll have to make the request yourself — I can’t do it. They say they may not be able to handle migration requests after Jan 3, but I think you have enough members that we could lobby for it.
:-]One side note… Please do not try to migrate into Multiply, at least not yet. I read some notes that say your MSN discussion board (possibly the entire group) will disappear immediately after being imported into Multiply, so there’s no going back and you’re hosed if you don’t like the result. FYI.
