There’s been a lot of news recently about nacreous clouds, also called “mother-of-pearl” clouds for their pearlescent look. Another name for them is PSCs, for Polar Stratospheric Clouds.

We’ve been seeing them at Palmer for the past month. They’re here almost every winter, but I don’t know that they’ve ever been seen this early (last year the first sighting was Sept 19th).

Lots of news in the papers around the start of August. Yahoo News from the big wire services had the info wrong though.

Newspapers up in the States converted the temperatures incorrectly on the radiosonde readings and also the temps needed for the clouds to form.

Correct Info and story was originally from http://www.aad.gov.au/default.asp?casid=23042
