Larry, K1IED was going to send me a brief about the Navy Departure from Antarctica but I never heard from him…I realize he is a busy man…I summered with the Navy from ’69-’72 at South Pole, Byrd, and McMurdo…Came back and W/O at McMurdo 73/74…is there a Website anywhere that covers the Navy Departure(When, Why, How)…Thanks for any info…Bob Conner, OAE W/O 73/74.

I haven’t found a site either about it, I wintered over 86-87 and just recently found out that the Navy departed, if I happen on to any info I’ll let you know.[/font:ru4zqxxe]

TO: ladyoren…found this site…not exactly what I was looking for, but better than nothing… http://www.theice.org/noel.html …I was looking for some Naval History article about why the navy bailed out after more than a century’s presence…I’ll keep looking…Bob.

Bob, It was interesting to talk to you on the radio tonight. I’m real interested in having some of the early “Antarcticans” post some photo’s of life back in the early days of the program. I don’t know of any websites dealing with the navy days down here. Maybe someone else knows of one.

Don’t you think I didn’t enjoy the QSO, Mike, since it is the contact with the ice since I left McMurdo in Oct 74…Tried all last year to contact KC4AAA from my 18-Wheeler but never made it…with the price of fuel like it is in FL, I’m fighting for my life with just 10 payments left on the truck…soon as I have a whole day at home, I’ll break out the egg crate with the Antarctic slides and pick out some good ones of Byrd, and “old” South Pole and even some of McMurdo that nobody hasg seen…I’ve got one favorite of Byrd just before we plugged the hole and flew out in ’72…It seems like the average thickness of the ice in the channel was about eleven feet but at least in those days it would all clear out and go out to sea…not just stay there…good luck to you guys…I’ll be in touch…73rds, Bob/W1NAV.

    Try both of these webpages.

The first one is based on the old US Navy VXE-6 webpage, the second has the “real” Ice Stories on it.
