[font=Arial:flrsw1vw]Sunday, 7 Apr THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT[/font:flrsw1vw][font=Courier New:flrsw1vw][/font:flrsw1vw][font=Arial:flrsw1vw]Retired U. S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Denis P. Zelna passed away at his home with family at the age of 66 on Friday, April 5, 2002.[/font:flrsw1vw][font=Courier New:flrsw1vw]
[/font:flrsw1vw][font=Arial:flrsw1vw]His is survived by his wife, Carole Zelna and five children, Jeff Zelna and wife Amy of Orlando, Fla., Greg Zelna and wife Kim of Melbourne, Fla., Scott Zelna and wife Jennifer of Virginia Beach, Holly Hicks and husband Steve of Windsor, Donald Zelna and wife Carrie of Cary, NC., and nine grandchildren.[/font:flrsw1vw][font=Courier New:flrsw1vw]
[/font:flrsw1vw][font=Arial:flrsw1vw]A native of Willoughby Hills, Ohio, he entered U. S. Naval Service in September 1955. During August 1957, he completed Navy flight training, was commissioned and designated a Naval Aviator and married his high school sweetheart, Carole A. Shambach. He served with VW-15 Patuxent Reiver, Md., VQ-2 Naval Station, Rota, Spain, Air Traffic Control Schools Staff, NAS Glynco, Ga., CINCPACFLEET Staff Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, VXE-6 McMurdo Station, Antarctica, NAS Quonset Point, R.I., and VRF-31 NAS Norfolk, where in April 1977, he, Carole, and their five children retired from naval service and established a permanent residence in Virginia Beach. At this time, he founded and operated Zelna and Sons Swimming Pool Service for the next 20 years.[/font:flrsw1vw][font=Courier New:flrsw1vw]
[/font:flrsw1vw][font=Arial:flrsw1vw]Funeral services will be held at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Catholic Chapel by Maj. Marian S. Korzeniowski at 1 p.m. Monday. For base security reasons, please notify the family to provide necessary information if planning to attend the services.
Family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel from 6:30 to 7:30 o.m. today. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society.[/font:flrsw1vw][font=Courier New:flrsw1vw]
