MemberJust wanted to say, we’re still down here.
It’s still dark.
It’s pretty consistently cold.
But, the haunting echoing bays of the ice weasels as they cross the sastrugi-covered plateau is quite soothing.
Nice auroras today under clear skies. I’m trying to keep my outside adventures to one per week. As an IT geek, I wouldn’t want to get too much fresh air or a tan.
One downside: we’re out of any $10 red wines! The Horror…the Horror….

KeymasterMmmm, ice weasel. They make a good pâté, especially when parboiled with some snow mushroom spores and served with a good $10 bottle of red wine.
I hope the electronics shop theater is still going strong. Maybe you can get them to put Bailey’s back on sale for ten bucks a bottle.

You were toast when you visited MCM during your R&R. I see you’ve slipped even further into the dark morass that is Pole.
I feel for ya.
Stop by the IT table on your way out. I want to see how far gone you are. 🙂
Later.

KeymasterI don’t think there has been an ice weasel in the McMurdo area for at least 10 years. I thought they were extinct. Too few weasels and too many McMurdites to eat them. Nice to hear they are still at the pole. A remnant population.

I wonder if they’re related to the Hotheaded Naked Ice Borers? After Discover magazine revealed their existence people snatched them up for zoos — we haven’t seen any since.

KeymasterGee, I forgot about the ice borers. Once they were rather common near Palmer Station, easy to find and catch with a stick especially on the seaward side of Torgersen.
A great hors d’oeuvres, we used to enjoy them out on the deck while watching the sunset. We usually parboiled and sauted them in butter with shallots and served garnished with fresh krill. Great with red wine 🙂

MemberMe, toasty?
I might not be as fresh and perky as I was back in November, but I find it hard to believe that I was getting crispy and golden brown in the center back in January.
We’re still rockin’ Comms Shop Theater. Though, not as often. We have good turnouts for Lost and Battlestar Galactica nights.
I just got a little cheekbone frost-nip just walking out to ARO. IT folk aren’t fit to venture outside, I’m thinking. I’ll only make one more trip out into the weather, when my Herc arrives.
The Bailey’s is cheap again, but the expensive wine offsets it.
I really should have ‘borrowed’ the MCM Coffeeshop espresso machine for winter. I think Polies need it more.

There is life after the ice! The paparazzi finally recogizned me and put me on the front page of the local newspaper…

KeymasterLorie says you are just jealous, Atlas.
Nice shot Glenn, Lorie and I spent the evening on Pebble Beach here in CC picking up agates for our collection.

MemberIsn’t it funny that sunshine is newsworthy?

KeymasterAfter a gloomy week, anytime the sun comes out and people sit on the beach , it should be on the front page of the newspaper.
That’s almost as good as it gets. Last night the sun set into a far off fog bank over the pacific. It went down as a giant egg shape and you could see the top of the fog moving like waves on the ocean. Lorie and I were hunting agates on the beach, but there must have been 15 cars parked on the cliff watching the sunset. It should have been in the paper as well.

KeymasterGlenn, keep your eyes open. My sister just sent me an article that another foot washed ashore…:)

KeymasterI just checked. I’ve got at least two of my feet still.
June 18, 2008 at 10:49 pm #5742Sciencetech
KeymasterA fifth foot! Those most be the gristly bits that the sharks won’t eat, and the shoes keep them afloat.
I love that line, “Delta Police are now looking for answers.” Four floating feet, that’s normal. But FIVE feet, well that’s just a bit too much, eh.
