Ok, so they send you a ticket to fly to Denver for Psych /fire training/ trauma training —for two weeks— do they pay you or what? Please don’t say they re-enburse you six month later…
Fire school used to be paid. I didn’t go to trauma school but I think it was paid too, for those folks that went. I was never paid for the psych.

For the psych eval, All expenses were covered the last time I went, but we didn’t get paid an hourly rate. Airlines, Shuttles and Rooms were direct billed to RPSC and they gave us a cash advance to cover meals. It was just for the weekend so my experience would be different than a 2 week stint.
Are they sending you to a Wilderness First Responder (“woofer”) class? Or something else? I just completed a 9-day WFR class… I wish they would offer that to every Ice person who wants it — it’s valuable knowledge.
I went to fire school three times. For all the work you’re going to be doing they darn well better pay you. It’s also good knowledge and a paid multi-day workout, but all I really got out of it was knowing when to run like hell. Fighting fires is bloody dangerous, dirty work. In the Antarctic, McMurdo’s lucky to have a full time emergency response crew. Elsewhere there’s no backup at all — If someone’s stuck inside a burning building I’ll be the first to volunteer to go in and rescue them, but otherwise I say let the sucker burn. I’ll spray water on it from a long distance away, thank you; it’s just not worth the risk.
Regarding per-diem and reimbursement, don’t even get me started about webTE. The speed of reimbursement has improved remarkably, but you have to deal with their Mickey-Mouse software and little idiosyncratic rules. Act stupid and get help with it! Much easier that way.
:->Ha ha. Still got both of ’em, I can count to 12 on my toes.
(For those who haven’t heard, there’s been human feet washing ashore near where I live. I think I’ll go diving today.)
Oh, please say its faster than 8 months… I guess I don’t have a choice. Is anyone else going September 12th – 25th to Denver for this same school??
Don’t let Atlas rile you. Reimbursements have been fairly quick, once they’re submitted and approved. A few weeks, give or take.
The submittal process can be confusing, so that’s the part that irritates me. A lot of the rules are because the company has to comply with federal requirements for government contracts; it can be a hassle.
phil, I’ll be in this school next week (if my tkt arrives, still haven’t been ticketed). didn’t know they were doing it in sept. also.

phil, just returned from arff in salt lake – excellent training (if you like that kind of stuff)
We are paid for our time, not sure how long it takes to process. The hotel is decent, serves breakfast, and has basic lunch/dinner places within walking (anything else you can take the shuttle). You spend the money up front and submit expense report later is how we did it.
if you ARE doing the full fire training, bring kneepads! you will not regret it
