i hope you donʹt find this inappropriate because it is not related to work. i will be riding my bicycle around the world with the goal of riding on all of the continents. 4 to 5 years so i must budget. is there any way i can get to antartica cheaply and stay there cheaplyʔ of course i wonʹt be riding around antartica, but i would love to be able to at least find a road and take a snow spin. thanks and waiting for a reply.

lots of cruises come down this way. can you bring a bikeʔ i donʹt know. your best bet would be to get a job at one of the bases for a summer. m

.. or a job on a cruise shipʔ ʹʹantarcticaʹʹ and ʹʹcheapʹʹ are rarely heard in the same sentence.without getting a job, your best bet is probably to find a cruise that isnʹt full, usually in early to mid-november. it will cost perhaps 3 or 4 thousand (w.a.g.ʔ) usdollars at the dock in ushuaia, argentina, and just take your bike with you. make sure beforehand that theyʹll let you ride it on land when you get there.if youʹve ever seen the short film ʹʹberserker in the antarcticʹʹ that might also give you some ideas. a guy hitchhikes a ride on a small sailboat, and they go to the antarctic (itʹs true, all filmed by the owner of the boat). youʹd have to be a hardy soul to sail here, however.

most of the tour ship operators belong to the international association of antarctic tour operators (iaato). they have an excellent record of self policing and establish guidelines for their activities. i seroiusly doubt bike riding is something you would be allowed to do at any of the sites the tour ships visit.if you get a job working in the usap program at mcmurdo you can enjoy a bike ride on some approved routes.good luck

there are bikes at mcmurdo, so if you could get there on a tour ship you could conceivably take a quick ride on one. youʹd probably have to have a contact at the station, maybe mike from mcmurdo could hook you up.by far the cheapest way would be to start out working for rpsc, do your ride, then start riding from new zealand. the pacific leg of your journey would be paid for.

i donʹt have a bicycle, but there are lots around. iʹm leaving in the first part of october. if you get hired on down here and show up. iʹll see if i canʹt find someone who will let you use theirs for your project. mike in mcmurdo

mcmurdo recreation has some bikes available for check out. if you happen to get to mcmurdo on a tour ship your time on station is very limited and you would not get to use one of the bikes in the program.
