Hi all,[/align:tv6ljbrx] I saw in the news yesterday that there was an earthquake “near” Antarctica, how near was that and did you feel it? And what about tsunami waves? The TV news says “no problem” yet better ask to the people that are there :)[/align:tv6ljbrx] Thanks,[/align:tv6ljbrx] Stef n Maggie

There was a brief bump at Palmer, but that could have just been the glacier calving. The seismometers sure picked it up. No tsunami activity, not even a blip on the tide gage (the Indonesian tsunami was measurable here).

Hi Glenn,

…and what is a tide gage?

Thanks,

Hi Maggie,

A tide gage is anything that records the water heights (tides). In our case, it’s basically an electronic depth gauge hanging off our pier and connected to a PC.

The results on the computer screen look a lot like the tide charts you’d see in an almanac.

Never felt a thing in MCM. In fact I didn’t even know about it till now.
