Well the Smurf Shack is no longer with us. It burned to the ICE starting at approx 10:20AM 5-12-08, and finally burning it self out at approx 16:00. There is nothing left of the shack besides the melted generator. The firehouse responded with red 4 and then later red 5 but with a 40 min response from town it was too late of course by the time it was sighted it was too late it was just mop up response from the get go.  The old dry wood went up quick. just wanted to share the news. ‘Running like clockwork’…that’s funny.

So true about the paperwork, though.  I bet DB’s swimmin’ in it.

What a weird-ass winter season.  Three and a half months to go, too!
Tim, take care of yourself.  Keep the bowling alleys oiled.

DB undoubtably is handling it with style.

Why was it running at this time of year Tim? I’m guessing it was out at Pegasus.

The fire aside. How is the season progressing?

Yes Roxane its me, Things are going as smooth as can be expected with a short staff. the hot tub is doing good, the bowling alleys have been cleaned and oiled, the coffee machine has been moved to Gallegers and a few cups of coffee have been made. today was the first winter tue morning coffee. but only George Lampman (host)  and I showed up. It is a weird “Winter” it doesn’t seem like winter with the extended season and all. it is pretty laid back, everyone doing their own thing. a few smaller parties but no big ones yet.
the smurf shack was still running because fleet ops was doing berm reduction at Pegasus. they are considering how they are going to finish now. move another gen out which building to warm up etc. but it has deffiantle been a winter of mishaps,2 dozers breaking through the lens building the black island road, SAR rolling the haglund on the way back, The Smurf fire we are wondering what else will happen. of course the real ironic part of it all was that we had spent teh morning in a all MCM safety meeting on past occurances and watched videos of the chaple and heavy shop fires and then 2 hrs later we have our own little barbeque. well that is the update. How funny
New Zealand isn’t going to let the Bad Santa incident go away.

Wonder if we should offer up some choice stories of some happenings at Scott Base, like the female stripper in the bar.  Or why there are no longer NZDF folks working for ATO at McMurdo…pass out in your underware in a conference room in 175… and on and on.

The New Zealand news would eat it up. Rumor mill says the source for the Bad Santa stories came from SB.

    Mike,

Actually I have no interest in feeding negative stories to the NZ press about the AntNZ program.  Having dealt with too many over the years about the USAP I would not wish that on my friends across the hill.  It is funny that the NZ press seems to focus on negative stories about the USAP and almost never has any negative coverage on theAntNZ program.

    Another likely source is BDP.

    Hey Tim…
I’m familiar with the video of the heavy shop fire, filmed by friend Allen Cull (do they give him credit?) but this is the first I’ve heard that there was video of the chapel fire. Is it any good (ie worth finding a copy)?

There are no pictures or video of the 1976 summer camp fire at Pole.
