I figure I’m a 2 and a half. There just aren’t any jobs in the real world that are similar to my ice jobs. We are like the people who do everything. In the real world they hire different people to do each job. Boring, All the interesting jobs pay minimum wage and I can’t touch them. In fact the really interesting jobs are staffed by vollenteers. Bummer. Back to the ice for money and the fact I don’t fit in.

I certainly am on #3… That quote didn’t fully ring true until this time around. We (James & I) are off the Ice, and are planning on taking a break for several years. However, we’re finding it difficult to function in the real world. A lot has changed in the time I’ve been on the Ice, and for the things that are the same, they seem to be more difficult to deal with. And what will I do for a job? Anyway, we’re in Alaska now… James signed a 2 year contract, and we’re thinking we’ll stay for at least 2-3 years. We’re even considering buying a house – scary!
Anyway, I just wanted to say hello… I’m still keepin’ an eye on things here.

It sounds like you and I (and a lot of other Ice people) are in the same head space. We’ve been down a lot and need a break… but don’t know what to do, or else we’re having trouble coping with the real world. People may think I’m joking when I say that working on the ice will mess you up, but I’m totally serious.
I’m definitely ‘nesting’, working on the house and — gawd ferbid! — actually going to garden shops. I think something happens when you get in your 40’s: suddenly your eyes go bad and you start to notice flowers. Weird. Owning a house AND working on the Ice is not bad, so long as you have a good house sitter or else can lock the place up for six months and walk away without worrying about the place.

😉Ok, we are buying a house. Also for 10 years we didn’t need furniture. We’ll have a house with a blow up mattress and 2 five dollar sofas from yard sales.
Eyes went bad years ago. Lorie is ready to garden and is designing things before we move in. She is making the transition by working and going back to school at the same time.
Finished my Medical today. No problems. Got the blood work. High cholesterol and one point over on RBC and 2 on Neutrophils whatever the hell they are. I imagine they’ll be sending me back for followups.
Exercise stress test still to come.
