MemberHi Everyone
Just a couple of questions–if I don’t require prescription sunglasses, is it still in my best interest to pay for and order my own pair or are the ones that will be issued to me usually in good enough shape to use?
And, if I were to order a pair or prescription sunglasses (or non-prescription), do you recommend Fantasy Eyeland or Opticus?
Thanks
Big V

KeymasterThe issue sunglasses will work fine for you, but stylish they are not. I think the majority of people will bring sunglasses with them and keep the issue ones as backup. I wear glasses and find it a nuscence to be changing from regular glasses to sunglasses all the time. What do you do with the spare pair? Also it’s too easy to drop good glasses and break them. Instead I opt for the most uncool looking things around. Those big ugly wrap around sunglasses that fit over everything. I know I look like something out of a nerd movie but they do the trick and I don’t mind if I drop them. By the end of the season they are pretty scratched up, but my good glasses are in good shape.
I can’t recommend one brand over another of the prescription glasses. I can say for sure that you will want to get polarized lenses. There is a lot of glare here in the summer and you ‘ll appreciate the polarized lenses for that. More so if the nacreous clouds are out you will need polarized lenses to see the colors.

MemberV,
Check out Ray-Ban. They have a nice wrap around pair that is good to block the sun from the sides of your eyes. If your prescription is not too bad you can even get them in bifocal with dark lenses. I’ve had mine for over a year and they are great. They are a graduated lense with the middle set for viewing my computer screen. They were about $250. Really keeps the sun out. The blowing volcanic dust can also be a problem and can scratch the lenses down in Mcmurdo. A good Croakie neck/glass strap will cut down on your chances of dropping them too.

KeymasterOne other thing. Don’t buy photo gray glasses. In the cold they get almost black and they take forever to lighten once you go indoors. I had to wear sunglasses over mine to stop them from getting dark.
