KeymasterFriends,
It saddens me to say this, but it may be time for Iceboard to go away.
For a long time I was able to uniquely modify the software to prevent spambot registrations, but the spammers are now overwhelming my ability to keep up. Additionally, I may be at sea for the next couple of months and unable to attend to the board. Rather than have it flooded with spam, some of it pornographic, I will shut down new registrations, essentially killing the board.
If someone steps up and says they are willing to check on it daily, deleting spam posts and bogus accounts, and moderating with a light hand, then I will gladly provide them with the passwords, leaving the board in their trust.
Otherwise, I am going to freeze the board in about two weeks. The existing posts will still be readable and current registered users will still be able to post, but new registrations will be locked out. When the domain expires in January I plan on moving the database to an archive at my other domain (60south.com) where it will still be readable, but letting this domain expire: bye-bye Iceboard.org.
I welcome any suggestions or help. My life is calling me away and I can no longer maintain the board with the same dedication as in the past.
🙁Cheers,
glenn

MemberThanks “bill” and “been there” I agree, this board is an invaluable resource and keeping the spam posts deleted is certainly worth keeping the iceboard going! Good and safe travels to Glenn also! S.D.

MemberI just registered for IceBoard yesterday and then today read this post that it may go away January 1. Is that still the plan? I hope not. It’s a remarkable site to visit.

KeymasterHello Horizon,
Welcome! I think we’re good for a while longer, thanks to Sundog and Bill as moderators. We still get occasional spam attacks but I’ve hacked the code in such a way that the problem has diminished.
(Hmmm. Perhaps I should re-classify this thread… Not an announcement any more.)
Anyway, welcome again, and feel free to post any comments or questions.
cheers,
glenn

MemberGlenn,
Thanks for the good news. As a land-locked weather nut who thinks of ice as the worst kind of hell, and yet also finds it rich with intrigue, I’m so happy this board will be here for a while for me to visit. It’s clearly an A ride. Happy New Year.

MemberWhew….good to hear its still sticking around.
I was having the worst time with spammers but I found nukesentinel and went to a ported version of pbpbb for php-nuke. I dropped back to 7.6 version simply because the guys like that one the most and took it upon themselves to keep updating it, (current ver is 8.1 I think–full of holes). But anyhoo, give it a though, I dont get spammers anymore at all and botscripts are automatically blocked by IP.
(the recent updates keep causing invalid sessions)
I know I’ve been gone for a while, but whatever, I always liked this place.
