I was wondering how long it takes to get to the South pole. I would think it would be different times due to the different forms of transportation, time of year, weather conditions, starting point. But what’s the average time it takes someone who is going there to work during summer or winter to get there? Thanks, Sam

During the austral summer, flying in an LC-130 aircraft, it takes about three hours to get from McMurdo to Pole. During the winter, unless it is a life threatening emergency, you can not get to Pole.

I would add, if you’re coming from Virginia, 4 days minimum. 2 days to New Zealand, a day there to prepare, and 1-2 days from Christchurch to McMurdo to the Pole. That is, if the weather gods smile on you and nothing breaks on the planes.
